Integrated Project in the 6th EU framework programme

Back to preliminary programme

Cross-comparison of climate change adaptation strategies across regions

For the cross-comparison of climate change adaptation strategies across regions the following questions were analysed for seven NeWater case study basins Amudarya, Elbe, Guadiana, Nile, Orage, Rhine and Tisza:

  • What changes in climate and impacts on water-related sectors are expected?
  • How the adaptive capacities of the governance regimes can be characterized?
  • What are the drivers and barriers for development of climate change adaptation strategies?
  • What is the status of implementation of adaptation strategies, and which measures are needed, existing, planned and missing?

The answers were collected using different methods: interviews with policy makers and stakeholders, distribution of the questionnaire, discussions at workshops, and extraction of information from the relevant reports. After that the responses were analyzed and inter-compared between regions. During the plenary session the results of inter-comparison will be presented and discussed. Such a cross-comparison of climate change adaptation strategies across large regions in Europe, Asia and Africa was not done before, and is beneficial for water managers and policy makers at the water board and national levels in these and other river basins for improving preparedness to the expected climate change impacts.

The session is strucutured as follows:
Cross-Comparison of Climate Change Adaptation Strategies across Regions (Valentina Krysanova (PIK))
Comparative Analysis of Adaptive Capacity of Water Management Regimes (Patrick Huntjens (USF))
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats related to Climate Change Adaptation (Chris Dickens (INR))

Plenum discussion & questions from audience
