Integrated Project in the 6th EU framework programme

The Institute for Environmental Systems Research of the University of Osnabrück has openings for

PhD Research Positions in Water Governance (E13/2 TV-L)
Learning Processes
Multi-level Governance
Empirical Analyses and Simulation Studies

The PhD research will be part of a program on water governance and adaptive and integrated water
management that will continue activities initiated under the umbrella of the EU funded project
NEWATER (New approaches to adaptive water management under uncertainty - www.newater.info). A
management and transition framework has been developed to analyse the adaptive capacity and the
dynamics of water resource management regimes. The framework has been applied for exploratory
studies on the characteristics of multi-level governance regimes, the role of learning processes,
handling of uncertainties and responses to expected impacts of climate change in a number of case
studies in Europe, Central Asia and Africa. The framework will be further developed and research will
be continued by more in depth analyses in a wider range of case studies and the development of
simulation models. Individual PhD research projects will focus either on empirical analyses or on
development and application of simulation models.

Candidates should hold a degree in social sciences or in an interdisciplinary field such as political
science, geography, ecological economics or system science. The modelling studies require experience
in system dynamics and complex systems analysis. Experience in water governance or water
management will be of advantage. The challenging tasks require good analytical skills, flexibility and
the willingness to collaborate in an interdisciplinary and dynamic team. You will find an excellent
working environment and the possibility for exchange in international networks in particular in the
context of the Global Water System Project (www.gwsp.org) and in collaboration with the Resilience
Centre in Stockholm.

The initial appointment will be for one year with a potential extension for a duration of up to three
years.

Applications for the position should be directed until the 10th of August 2008 to Prof. Dr. Claudia
Pahl-Wostl, Chair for resource management, Institute for Environmental Systems Research, University
of Osnabrück, Barbarastr. 12, D-49076 Osnabrück.
More details can be found on the webpage: www.usf.uni-osnabrueck.de/~pahl. For further information
you can also contact Prof. Claudia Pahl-Wostl (pahl[at]usf.uni-osnabrueck.de).

The university is an equal opportunity employer. Women are especially encouraged to apply. If
equally qualified, disabled candidates will be given priority.
